History of the Care Home

Originally named Savile House, Thomas Owen House in 1911 was home to a rather modest family who took advantage of the large manufacturing industries in Dewsbury at the time. Looking further back however, the building was owned by the Saviles, a wealthy family dating from far back as the early 15th century. The most famous Savile was Thomas Savile, who once owned the townships of Dewsbury and Thornhill. He has also given his name to the bridge across from the river Calder that leads to the town centre, as well as having founded Wakefield Cathedral and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. You may have even heard of the various town and street names in Dewsbury, Ossett and Wakefield which have 'Savile' in the name.

In more recent times, Thomas Owen has had numerous additional buildings added and has had many different uses. The previous owners had used the buildings as a carpet showroom and in the early 1980's it was even used a night club. This was always an unconfirmed rumour but has since been supported by the finding of a number of disco lights in an old loft! The home was bought by Kevin and Ann Martin in 1988 and was opened as a nursing home for older people with mental health needs in 1989.

The sheer size and interior space of the home provides an ideal living environment for today's residents including those who enjoy a good boogie!
